EndNote

EndNote Online (also known as EndNote Online Classic) is a pared-down, web-based version of EndNote 2025 for desktop.

EndNote Online allows you to:

  • Collect and organize references
  • Use Cite While You Write in Word to create your bibliography
  • Transfer references from EndNote Online to desktop or vice versa with EndNoteSync
  • Share references with colleagues who also have EndNote Online

Please note:

There are 3 options for using EndNote in a web-based environment: EndNote Online, EndNote Web, and EndNote Basic. We recommend using EndNote Online at this time, as its functionality is currently more robust than the other two options. You can access EndNote Web at web.endnote.com and register for an account; you can also do this by opening EndNote 2025 desktop and clicking on Help > EndNote Web. You can register for an account there and access EndNote Web that way after registering. Although EndNote Web has been updated for the recently released EndNote 25, it does not seem to allow sharing with other users yet or much of the functionality of EndNote Online. You can read more about the differences here.

For now, we recommend EndNote Online.

In order to use the full version of EndNote Online, you must be on campus and using a Cincinnati Children's computer when creating an account.

Instructions for setting up an EndNote Online account:

  • Use your Cincinnati Children's email address to create an account and select a password.
  • For additional help with setting up EndNote Online, see this EndNote Online guide (PDF) from Clarivate

Notes about EndNote Online:

  • If you register for EndNote online when you're not on campus or not using a Cincinnati Children's-issued laptop or desktop, you will only be able to use EndNote Basic, which has limited functionality.
  • Due to the availability of EndNote Online, we no longer offer downloads for personal computers. Please email prattlibrary@cchmc.org if you have further questions about this restriction.

EndNote Online essentials

EndNoteSync

This feature enables you to transfer your groups and references from your EndNote Online account to your EndNote desktop and the reverse. It is highly recommended that you set up this account and sync it. Even if you never use the online version, consider this your backup library in case you lose your desktop version.

See the EndNote Online tab on how to sign up for Endnote Online.

Please note that you must be on campus and using a Cincinnati Children's-issued computer to get the full version of EndNote Online.

How to set up syncing

From the EndNote desktop application,

  • Click on Edit > Preferences > Sync.
  • Click on Enable Sync, then Sign Up and create an account using your Cincinnati Children's credentials.
  • Go back to EndNote desktop and enter your user name and password. Check the Sync Automatically box; you can also leave the box unchecked, however you will need to click the Sync button on the top menu to sync your desktop to your online library whenever necessary.

You can find additional information on syncing here.
